Sarah Ashburn (Bullock) is an uptight FBI agent and has her eye on a promotion. She has closed more case than anybody else in the FBI, but the thing is none of her co-workers like her because she knows pretty much everything. She is sent to Boston to uncover the identity of a ruthless drug lord (Michael McDonald) and is paired up with a foul-mouthed Boston Cop (McCarthy), but they don't get along at all!
Sarah Ashburn, an FBI agent, is extremely ambitious and has her eye on a promotion, but she doesn't get along with her co-workers. She is sent to Boston to uncover the identity of an elusive drug lord, Mr. Larkin, by tracking down his proxy, Rojas, and is told that she'll have a good shot at the promotion if she finds Larkin. When she arrives in Boston, she learns that Larkin has been eliminating his competition and taking over their operations. She learns that Rojas is in Boston PD custody and goes to see him to ask him what he knows about Larkin, but is warned that the cop who arrested Rojas, Shannon Mullins, is very territorial, and she is not exactly sociable. When the two meet they don't get along. When Mullins learns why Ashburn is in Boston, she decides to find Larkin herself. Ashburn is told by her boss to work with Mullins, but it won't be easy because Ashburn does things by the book while Mullins does things her way.
The Heat is Paul Feig's follow him to his smash hit comedy, Bridesmaids. The trailers for this film made it look absolutely hysterical, a completely can't miss comedy, but it's extreme raunchiness turns out to be it's worst enemy. When an ambitious FBI agent (Sandra Bullock) is sent to Boston to catch a monster, she sees it as an open and shut case. What she didn't expect was to run into a local detective who is anything but conventional. The background story and case the pair are working on is really terrific and very well written, with just the right amount of comedy, this really could have been the female version of Lethal Weapon. Instead, the Heat goes so far over the top, that by the end it just isn't that funny anymore. Sandra Bullock is terrific, despite playing her usual whiny loner character. When she finally has had enough of McCarthy and snaps, it really is the best part of the whole film. Mellisa McCarthy is the problem here, as she too is playing her usual character, but to a real extreme. I find her to be very funny, but in this film, nothing is serious and every other word out of her mouth is an F bomb. Every time the story really starts to take off and become interesting, she shows up to screw everything up. Don't get me wrong here, this film is much better than some of the other comedies to come out lately, but as it's destine for a sequel, my hope is that they will tune it down a bit. The right line at the right time can really make a film like this and some scenes are hilarious, but the truth is, when the jokes are non-stop and the action is few and far between, it really hurts the film. Lethal Weapon would be the perfect template for a team like this and with the right jokes at the right time, they could find even more success than Glover and Gibson did.
&#39;THE HEAT&#39;: Four and a Half Stars (Out of Five) <br/><br/>Classic 80s style buddy cop flick (greatly inspired by movies like &#39;RUNNING SCARED&#39;, &#39;BEVERLY HILLS COP&#39; and &#39;LETHAL WEAPON&#39;), this one just happens to have two females leads in the roles usually played by guys. The film stars Sandra Bullock and rising superstar Melissa McCarthy as the mismatched duo. It was directed by Paul Feig, who&#39;s most famous for directing the hit comedy &#39;BRIDESMAIDS&#39; (which gave McCarthy her breakout role) as well as creating the critically acclaimed TV series &#39;FREAKS AND GEEKS&#39;. It was written by Katie Dippold, who&#39;s making her feature film debut with this film (after writing and producing several episodes of the hit TV series &#39;MADTV&#39; and &#39;PARKS AND RECREATION&#39;). Dippold has said that while writing the film she was inspired by the buddy cop genre and wanted to make the same type of movie just with women as &quot;awesome cops&quot; instead of men. Feig is famous for making a typical guy&#39;s style raunchy comedy film and casting it with women instead of men (&#39;BRIDESMAIDS&#39;) so he naturally seems like the perfect fit to direct Dippold&#39;s script. The result is near perfection; it&#39;s like the 80s all over again (just with women in the guy roles, like the filmmakers intended).<br/><br/>Bullock stars as an uptight FBI agent named Sarah Ashburn, who doesn&#39;t get along with her co-workers (or have any friends) but is really good at her job. While attempting to secure a promotion she travels to Boston to find an infamous drug dealer. She questions a suspect in custody there (Spoken Reasons, a professional you tuber in his feature film debut) and pisses off the officer who arrested him, loose cannon Detective Shannon Mullins (McCarthy). The two immediately conflict on the case, and try to one-up each other, but eventually (of course) team up. Their opposing methods, of doing police work, at first cause many problems (and comedic hijinks) but they do eventually learn to work together (of course) and be an asset to one another.<br/><br/>I wasn&#39;t a big fan of &#39;BRIDESMAIDS&#39; and didn&#39;t think the trailer for this film looked very funny but I was pleasantly surprised by it. I hadn&#39;t been a fan of McCarthy&#39;s either, prior to &#39;IDENTITY THIEF&#39;, but with that film and this she&#39;s really starting to win me over. I think she&#39;s making very smart choices as an actress, and comedic talent, and is becoming one of the biggest box office forces to be reckoned with (and rightfully so). McCarthy doing this film kind of reminds me of Whoopi Goldberg doing action/comedy films like &#39;FATAL BEAUTY&#39;, &#39;JUMPIN&#39; JACK FLASH&#39; and &#39;BURGLAR&#39; in the 80s; she&#39;s definitely got what it takes to rival the biggest comedy bad boys in film today. I&#39;ve always thought Bullock is talented but she picks a lot of crappy films to star in. Here she puts her talents to great use (for once) and is perfectly cast opposite McCarthy. The two have great chemistry together and highlight each other&#39;s comedic timing. Dippold&#39;s script is very clever and Feig is the perfect director to bring it to life. It really does have that 80s cop movie feel to it. The action scenes are surprisingly violent and the film is R rated (for vulgar content as well). I&#39;d say everyone involved really did their inspirations proud.<br/><br/>Watch our movie review show &#39;MOVIE TALK&#39; at:
If you’re going to make a dopey, bawdy, foul-mouthed, predictable lady-buddy-cop movie, you might as well make it funny. And until it overstays its welcome in the final half-hour, The Heat is shamefully funny.
The US Blu-ray features two versions of the film. Next to the R-rated theatrical version, we have an unrated cut that doesn&#39;t offer a substantially better film. If you liked the theatrical version, you might enjoy some of the plot extension that the longer cut introduces since they add a little humor but they are not necessary to alter the film&#39;s overall impression. In total the Unrated Version runs approx. three minutes longer than the Theatrical Version.
